Job Title Director, Walk In Center & Emergency Dept.

Description Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Participates in the development and implementation of standards, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the Patient Care Services Department, which facilitate quality patient care and creative professional practice as required by state and federal agencies.
2. Assumes charge responsibilities for the department in the event of the Vice President for Patient Care Services' absence for any reason. Assumes responsibility for interim supervision of any of the clinical areas in the event of vacancy or indefinite absence in any of the Nursing Director positions.
3. Selects, develops, and evaluates nurse managers in assigned service areas, and administrative office staff.
4. Initiates an ongoing plan of guidance, counseling, and evaluation that will foster the professional growth and development of those for whom directly responsible; assists and encourages the manager in each area to carry out a similar program for his/her nursing staff members.
5. Interprets policies of the hospital and of the Patient Care Services Department to nursing personnel as necessary.
6. Encourages and promotes interdisciplinary team planning and collaboration in order to provide comprehensive patient care.
7. Collaborates with hospital staff in other departments, with physicians, and with support services in planning and providing coordinated services to patients.
8. Participates in planning for the use of existing facilities and for the development of new facilities utilized for patient care, in keeping with important future trends to which the hospital must respond.
9. Manages program development for assigned areas to foster new and improved, cost-effective services to patients. Participates in development and revision of programs in collaboration with Nursing Staff Development and Nursing management related to the professional practice of nursing aimed at maintaining and improving the quality of the nursing care delivery system.
10. Establishes and maintains effective lines of communication between the Vice President for Patient Care Services and assigned staff and units; analyzes and interprets staff and patient care needs and problems within assigned areas; and communicates such information to the Vice President for Patient Care Services, recommending action as appropriate.
11. Organizes assigned nursing areas in such a way as to delineate authority, functional responsibilities, relationships, and communication lines so as to provide for an effective organization of services and to maximize the safety and quality of care to patients.
12. Directs and oversees use and maintenance of the information system in the Operating Room and Nursing office and development of its program for the purpose of maintaining adequate statistics, clerical functions, and information systems to ensure maximum efficiency in management of the departments.
13. Oversees and directs the surgical booking and scheduling of the Operating Room and related activities, with appropriate input and collaboration by the Admitting and Anesthesia Departments.
14. Participates in the development and preparation of the budget for the Patient Care Services Division, and manages the budget for the respective areas that report to him/her.
15. Participates in committee responsibilities and activities both within and outside of the Division of Patient Care Services.
16. Demonstrates active involvement with appropriate professional organization(s).
17. Works under the direction of the Vice President for Patient Care Services.
18. Supports and participates in the hospital's commitment to Continuous Improvement. Through the development and use of objective data, plans, implements, and evaluates processes that result in the delivery of integrated services.




Requirements KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Current licensure from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

2. B.S.N. and master's degree with appropriate clinical/administration
specialty.

3. Four to six years' experience in nursing management, with at least one year in nursing administration.

4. Demonstrated leadership management ability.

5. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in interpersonal relationships.

6. A high degree of analytical ability to manage budgets, plan department programs and activities, and determine needs of department.
